WordPress speed optimisation (WPO): a faster site for €360

Optimising WordPress means getting your site and server working properly: caching, images, code, PHP and database. We measure before and after, and show you the improvement. Results guaranteed.

Web Performance Optimization

What WPO optimisation is

WPO stands for Web Performance Optimization: the work of making a website load fast and respond without stuttering. It is part technical, part common sense. It is measured with Google’s Core Web Vitals: LCP (when the main content appears), INP (how long it takes to react to a click) and CLS (whether the page jumps around while loading).

It matters for two reasons. People visiting your site do not wait, and Google takes loading experience into account. The first is your business; the second is a bonus, not a promise of rankings.

Core Web Vitals: why Google rewards fast websites

Google measures how real Chrome users experience your site and uses it when ranking results. There are three metrics, and to pass you need to meet them on at least 75% of visits.

LCP

Main content loading

How long it takes for the important part to appear: the large image or the headline.

Good ≤ 2.5 sPoor > 4 s

INP

Response to input

How long the page takes to react to a click, a tap or a key press.

Good ≤ 200 msPoor > 500 ms

CLS

Visual stability

Whether content jumps while loading so you end up tapping the wrong thing.

Good ≤ 0.1Poor > 0.25

How it affects rankings

Google says so in its documentation: its ranking systems reward content that offers a good page experience, and Core Web Vitals are how that is measured. They will not lift a weak page to the top, but between two equally useful pages, the fast one has the edge.

Google also crawls a fast-responding site more and better, and what it measures is real visits: a site that only runs well on your office computer does not pass.

And what matters more: your visitors

Every second of waiting on mobile means people leaving before they see what you offer. A fast site does not just rank better: it converts more, because the visitors who arrive stay.

You can see your real data in the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console, or in PageSpeed Insights, in the real-user data section. More in Google’s guide to Core Web Vitals.

The work

What we do on your WordPress site

We work on the server and the website at the same time, because one without the other is only half the job.

Server and PHP

We check the PHP version, memory, opcode cache and server configuration. Many slow sites start here, before a single line of the theme has loaded.

Caching

We set up caching properly: page, browser and object caching when the hosting allows it. No pile of plugins tripping over each other.

WebP and AVIF images

We convert and resize images to modern formats and turn on lazy loading where it makes sense. Optimising WordPress images is often the change that makes the biggest difference.

CSS and JavaScript

We minify, combine and defer whatever is not needed on load. That includes sites built with Elementor or other page builders, where surplus code is common.

Database

We clean out revisions, transients and leftovers from plugins you no longer use, and review the heaviest tables.

Plugins that slow the site down

We measure which ones slow down loading, which can be removed or replaced and which are essential. That decision is made with you, not on our own.

Why your WordPress site is slow

It is almost always a mix of four things: hosting that is barely enough for what you ask of it, a theme or page builder loaded with code, too many plugins and uncompressed images. Add no caching on top, and every visit forces the server to build the page from scratch.

There is no need to guess which one applies to you. With the PageSpeed report in front of you, you can see what weighs and what does not. For a first look, the speed test gives you a diagnosis in a minute.

Real cases

Before and after: sites we have optimised

Two sites with everything against them: a very heavy theme and page builder (Jupiter + WPBakery) and shared hosting that could not be changed. The data comes from PageSpeed Insights, and you can check it yourself right now.

Real case

Kalma Digital

WordPress with the Jupiter theme and WPBakery, on IONOS shared hosting with no administrator access.

An extreme case: a very heavy theme and page builder, three icon sets and a server that could not be changed. The main content took almost 24 seconds to appear on mobile. Now it takes under 5, and the page no longer jumps around while it loads.

Real case

ia.kalmadigital.com

Same hosting and same theme (Jupiter + WPBakery), with no page cache: every visit was built from scratch.

The home page weighed 5.4 MB and took almost 28 seconds to show its content on mobile. With caching, correctly sized images and non-essential JavaScript loaded later, it now weighs a third as much and reaches Google's green band on desktop.

  • PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals report, before and after.
  • Caching, WebP/AVIF images, optimised CSS and JavaScript.
  • Server, PHP and database tuning.
  • Clean-up of plugins that slow the site down.

Does not include

  • Changing hosting or migrating to another server.
  • Website redesign.

If we see your site needs something else, we tell you before we start and quote it separately. If the problem is your hosting, see WordPress migration.

What we do not promise

We do not guarantee a specific PageSpeed score. The result depends on your hosting, theme and plugins, and some sites hit a ceiling there. Before we start, we tell you what is realistic in your case. And if anything gets worse afterwards, you have 30 days for us to review it.

Measured before and after

Before touching anything we measure your site, and when we finish we measure it again under the same conditions. You get both PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals reports, so you can see what has changed and what has not, without having to take our word for it.

How to keep it fast afterwards

An optimised site slows down again over time: new plugins, uncompressed images, updates that change things. With the Essential WordPress maintenance plan, €25/month + VAT, someone keeps it up to date and monitored. And if your site needs rebuilding rather than fine-tuning, we look at it as custom development.

Who does the work

We are a studio from Oleiros (A Coruña, Spain) with 8 years of hands-on WordPress experience, working freelance since February 2018. You talk to the person who does the work, not to a go-between. Meetings are by video call and, if you are in the city of Barcelona, we can also meet in person.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about WordPress speed optimisation

Why is my WordPress site so slow?

It is usually a mix of underpowered hosting, a heavy theme or page builder, too many plugins, unoptimised images and no caching. The specific cause shows up in the PageSpeed report; you can start with the free speed test.

What is WPO and how is it different from SEO?

WPO deals with your site’s speed and loading experience. SEO is broader: content, links, structure and more. Speed is one part of the experience Google values, but improving it does not guarantee rankings.

Do I need to change hosting to make WordPress fast?

Not always. Often there is a lot to gain by tuning PHP, caching and the database. But some hosting falls short, and if yours is the limit, we tell you before we start and you decide. Changing hosting is not included in the optimisation.

Which caching plugin is best for WordPress?

It depends on your server and your site. Some hosts already include their own caching, and adding another plugin on top usually causes problems. We choose and configure the one that suits your case, and remove the ones that clash.

Does website speed affect Google rankings?

Yes. Google uses Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP and CLS) in its ranking systems as part of page experience. It does not replace good content, but between similar pages it favours the one that loads fast and does not jump around. Above all, a slow site loses visitors before they read what you offer.

How long does it take for the improvement to show in Google?

The improvement in the PageSpeed report shows as soon as we finish. The real-user data Google uses for Core Web Vitals builds up over weeks, so the change takes a while to show there. And we do not promise any effect on rankings.

What if something works worse after the optimisation?

You have a 30-day guarantee. If anything gets worse, we review it and fix it.
