Verifactu and WooCommerce

Verifactu for WooCommerce: when it becomes mandatory and how to prepare

Verifactu affects WooCommerce shops that issue invoices from their website or from software connected to it. There is time: the Spanish tax authorities have announced October 2028. Even so, it pays to know what applies to you and to get the shop ready without rushing.

Calendar checked on 24 October 2026 against the AEAT, the Spanish Ministry of Finance and the BOE.

What Verifactu is and why it affects your online shop

In plain English: Verifactu is a Spanish legal requirement for invoicing software, not a product you buy. It is aimed at businesses and self-employed people who pay tax in Spain. If your business is based outside Spain and you sell to Spanish customers, ask a Spanish tax adviser whether it applies to you.

Verifactu is the Spanish Tax Agency's (AEAT) system for making invoicing software record every invoice in a way that cannot be altered. Under Royal Decree 1007/2023, the system keeps a record for each invoice, can send it to the AEAT and adds a QR code to the invoice.

The obligation falls on the system that issues the invoices, not on the shop as such. If your WordPress site, your invoicing software or your ERP generates invoices, that set-up has to comply. That is why it affects online shops: almost all of them issue invoices in some way.

When Verifactu becomes mandatory: October 2028

On 5 October 2026, the Spanish Ministry of Finance published an information note (in Spanish) announcing that the outstanding obligations would be postponed until October 2028, so that they coincide with mandatory e-invoicing. It does not give an exact day. It keeps the technical requirements: integrity, retention, traceability and immutability.

Legal notice. Until the postponement is published in the BOE, the law in force is Royal Decree-law 15/2025, which sets 1 January 2027 for companies and 1 July 2027 for everyone else. The AEAT note on the deadline keeps it that way. Once the new rule is published, we will put the exact date here.

We do not know whether the postponement will be approved as announced, and we are not going to guess. That is why this page shows the date it was last checked.

How does Verifactu affect you?

Answer four questions and we will give you a rough idea of which date would apply to you under the current law and where to start. We do not store your answers unless you click

1. Are you a company or self-employed?
2. Do you have to use the SII (Spain's immediate VAT reporting system)?
3. How do you issue invoices today?
4. Which program do you use?

Your result

Answer the questions and you will see here what applies to you.

A rough guide; confirm it with your tax adviser. The dates depend on what is published in the BOE, Spain's official gazette.

WooCommerce does not invoice: where the obligation lies

On its own, WooCommerce generates orders, not invoices. That difference is the key to knowing whether Verifactu applies to you in full.

If your invoices come from invoicing software or an ERP connected to the shop, the obligation lies with that software. Your WordPress site just passes it the order.

If invoices are issued from WordPress, for example with a PDF invoice plugin, your shop plus that plugin become a computerised invoicing system. In that case, it is the plugin that has to comply.

And if you invoice by hand today, with a spreadsheet or a word-processing document, it is worth talking to your adviser before anything else. Most likely you will need to change method.

Options

Three ways to comply with Verifactu on WooCommerce

There is no single piece of Verifactu software. There are three realistic routes.

Connected invoicing software or ERP

The order comes into the shop and the invoice is issued in compliant software, such as Holded, Odoo or another. The shop connects to that software so the order flows across automatically. For shops with medium volume or with accounting already in place. Limitation: the connection has to be maintained.

Invoicing plugin for WooCommerce

The invoice is issued inside WordPress, with a plugin that states it complies with Verifactu. For small shops that want a single tool. Limitation: it depends on the plugin's developer keeping it up to date.

Free AEAT app

The Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) offers a free invoicing app. For a low volume of invoices. Limitation: it is manual and does not connect to the shop.

How to check that your software complies with Verifactu

There is no Verifactu certificate issued by the AEAT. What exists is a responsible declaration (declaración responsable) signed by the software developer, stating that their system complies with the regulation. Before choosing software or a plugin, ask the developer for:

  • The responsible declaration, with the product version it covers.
  • Whether their system sends the records to the AEAT (VERI*FACTU mode) or only stores them.
  • How it is updated when the rules change.

We do not call a specific product "compliant" without having seen that declaration.

Why prepare now, even though there is time

No rush, but do not leave it until the last month. According to the AEAT, you can already use it voluntarily and stop whenever you like: it is a good moment to test things calmly.

Switching software or plugins is cheaper and less stressful when you can test without pressure. In a hurry, you pick the first thing available. And it coincides with mandatory e-invoicing: it makes sense to sort out both at once, not in two separate projects.

What we do

What we do

We connect your shop to a Verifactu-compliant system. We do not sell our own invoicing software and we do not give tax advice: that is your adviser's job. Ours is the technical side.

Integrations with your invoicing system

We connect WooCommerce to Verifactu-compliant invoicing software, whether that is a commercial product, an ERP or the custom platform you already have. First we check whether there is a connector that does the job. We only build custom when there is no other way.

Help choosing, setting up and configuring

If you do not yet know which software to use, we help you choose it, configure it and connect it to the shop and the rest of your tools.

Automations when invoices are generated

When an invoice is issued, whatever you want can happen next: send it to the customer, notify the right person, pass it to accounting, reconcile the payment, generate the corrective invoice for a return or feed a report.

Who does the work

We are a studio from Oleiros (A Coruña, Spain) with 8 years of hands-on WordPress experience, working freelance since February 2018. You talk to the person who does the work, not to a go-between. Meetings are by video call and, if you are in the city of Barcelona, we can also meet in person. We connect the shop to the invoicing system; your adviser confirms the tax side. FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Verifactu in WooCommerce

Is Verifactu mandatory for a WooCommerce online shop?

If your shop issues invoices using a computer system, yes, from the date that applies to you. Businesses that must use the SII (Spain's real-time VAT reporting system) are excluded; check with your adviser.

When does Verifactu come into force?

On 5 October 2026, the Spanish Ministry of Finance announced a postponement until October 2028. Until this is published in the BOE (Spain's Official State Gazette), the current law sets 1 January 2027 for companies and 1 July 2027 for everyone else. We keep this date under review; it was last checked on 24 October 2026.

Can I use Verifactu now, even though it is not mandatory yet?

Yes. According to the AEAT, the period up to the mandatory date is a trial period: you can issue invoices with a VERI*FACTU system and stop whenever you like.

Is WooCommerce Verifactu-compliant on its own?

No, because WooCommerce does not issue invoices. It depends on the plugin or software that issues them.

Do I need a Verifactu plugin, or is my invoicing software enough?

Either works, as long as its developer has signed the responsible declaration. If you already have software and it works, the usual approach is to connect it to the shop.

What about the shop's simplified invoices (receipts)?

They are included too. The specific details are in the AEAT FAQs, and your adviser will tell you how they apply to your case.

Does Verifactu affect me if I am in the SII?

In principle, no: businesses that must use the SII are excluded. Check with your adviser and in the AEAT FAQs.

How much does it cost to adapt a shop to Verifactu?

It depends on how you invoice today and what needs connecting. We do not publish a price. We review how you invoice and give you a fixed written quote.
