Connect ChatGPT to your WordPress site and decide what it can touch
ChatGPT can check your site or shop and, on some plans, change it too. We tell you what yours allows, set up the connection and limit what it can do.
ChatGPT inside WordPress, or WordPress inside ChatGPT
These are two different things. A plugin using the OpenAI API puts AI inside the editor: it is good for drafting or summarising, and the API is paid for separately from your subscription.
An MCP connection works the other way round: from ChatGPT, you work with your site’s real data. If you only want help with writing, a plugin may be enough and you do not need this page.
What each ChatGPT plan allows with MCP
This is the first thing to check, because it decides whether ChatGPT can only read your site or change it too.
Pro: read and fetch
OpenAI says it can connect custom MCP servers with read and fetch permissions. It is good for asking about your data, not for changing it.
Business: write as well
It has full MCP, including write actions. Only admins and owners can create and publish the connection for the workspace.
Enterprise and Edu: role-based control
Admins can also use RBAC to decide who can create connections, who can access each one and which specific actions are allowed.
How MCP works in ChatGPT
MCP is the open standard that lets ChatGPT use external tools. Your site needs an MCP server for WordPress with an HTTPS address. If you already have one and your plan allows it:
- Open ChatGPT on the web, go to Plugins, click the + button and choose Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name, the server URL and the authentication.
- Read the risk warning, tick I understand and want to continue and click Create as a plugin.
- Review the tools it finds. In a company, an admin tests it and publishes it for the team.
- In each conversation, type @ and select the connection.
What to know first
- It asks for confirmation case by case. ChatGPT may ask depending on permissions, context and the impact of the action, and it may block very risky ones. Do not treat this as a guarantee: the real limit is the tools you switch on.
- Tools stay frozen. In a workspace, ChatGPT uses a fixed snapshot of the approved tools. If you update the server and the change is not compatible, calls can fail until an admin refreshes the connection, and nobody gets an automatic alert.
- It only works on the web. OpenAI says custom MCP servers cannot be connected from mobile.
- Deep research does not write. It can only use these connections to read or fetch.

ChatGPT or Claude: which to connect
Both can use the same server. If you already pay for one, it is usually best to start there, unless your plan falls short.

We decide which tools are switched on, with which credential, and what stays out.
03. Testing on a copy
We set up the server on a copy of your site and test the real tasks, including write confirmations.
04. Publishing and handover
We move it to production, your admin publishes the connection and we leave you a note of what each tool does and how to remove it.

ChatGPT and WordPress: frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT be connected to WordPress?
Yes. ChatGPT connects to an MCP server reachable over HTTPS and installed on or alongside your site. What it can then do depends on your plan and the tools you switch on.
Which ChatGPT plan do I need?
According to OpenAI’s help centre, full MCP, including writing, is on Business and Enterprise/Edu. Pro can connect custom servers with read and fetch access. We check again before setting it up, because plans change.
Can ChatGPT Pro change my website?
Not this way: OpenAI limits Pro to read and fetch permissions on custom MCP servers. If you need it to create drafts or coupons, you need a Business plan or higher, or a different assistant.
Is a ChatGPT plugin for WordPress enough?
Yes, if you only want to draft inside the editor using the OpenAI API. That is not the same as connecting ChatGPT: the API is paid for separately from your subscription and the plugin only does what it was built to do.
Does it work with WooCommerce?
Yes, if the MCP server includes tools for the shop. It is best to start with queries and switch on write access one tool at a time, because a mistake in prices or orders shows quickly.
Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to my website?
It depends on the server and the permissions. OpenAI warns that an untrusted server increases risks such as prompt injection, and leaves it to you to check it is suitable. We use a separate credential for each connection, permissions per tool and an action log.
