Connect Claude to your WordPress site without giving it your password
Claude can check your pages and orders, prepare drafts and review your site from its own app. We set up the connection, limit what it can touch and hand it over tested.
Three ways to use Claude with WordPress
You do not always need to connect anything. It depends on whether you want help with writing or want it to work with your site’s data.
Copy and paste
What nearly everyone does: you ask Claude for some text and paste it into WordPress. Nothing to install, but Claude cannot see your site and you still do everything else yourself.
A plugin using the Claude API
AI appears inside the editor to draft or summarise. It is handy for writing, but it tends to stop at what that plugin does, and it needs its own API key.
Claude connected to your WordPress
Claude reads and works with your real data from its own app: pages, products, orders or logs. It is the only one of the three that lets you hand over whole tasks, and the one that needs most care with permissions.
How Claude connects to WordPress (Claude and MCP)
MCP is the open standard that lets Claude use external tools. Your site needs an MCP server for WordPress, reachable over the internet. Claude treats it as a custom connector.
With the server installed, this is how you add it on an individual plan:
- Open Customize > Connectors, click + Add and choose Add custom connector.
- Enter a name and your server URL, and click Continue.
- Review the authentication it detects, choose how to sign in and click Add.
- In each conversation, switch it on from the + button > Connectors.
On Team, an Owner adds it from Organization settings > Connectors and each person then connects their own account. These steps are not the hard part: that is setting up and limiting the server behind them properly.
What you can ask Claude to do in your WordPress site
You talk to it like a member of the team. These requests go from lower to higher risk, which is a good order to start in.
Review without touching anything
“List the pages with no meta description and suggest one for each.” A good first job, because it only needs read access.
Prepare content
“Draft a post about our returns policy, in the tone of our latest posts.” You review it and publish it.
Ask about the shop
“Which orders have gone more than three days without shipping?” It answers from your WooCommerce data, with no spreadsheet export.
Find problems
“Check this week’s error log and tell me which plugin causes most trouble.” With your permission, it can also prepare the fix.
What Claude should not be able to do
Anthropic does not verify custom connectors, and a malicious server could include hidden instructions. That is why it matters whose server it is and what you let it touch.
- Do not give it the administrator account. Each connection has its own credential, which you can revoke without affecting anything else.
- Start with read access. Write tools are switched on one at a time, once you have seen how it works.
- Be careful with “Allow always”. Anthropic says to use it only with servers and tools you trust to run unsupervised.
- Be careful with Research. That mode can use tools without asking for approval again, so Anthropic recommends turning off write tools first.
The detail is in the MCP server’s permissions, security and GDPR.
Claude or ChatGPT: which to connect
Both can use the same server. What matters most is which plan you have and whether it needs to write to your site.
| What changes | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Who can connect a custom server | All plans, including Free (one custom connector) | Business and Enterprise/Edu with full MCP; Pro with read and fetch only |
| Writing to your website | Yes, with the permissions you give the tools | Business and Enterprise/Edu only, not Pro |
| Who sets it up in a company | Owners and Primary Owners; on Enterprise, also custom roles with that permission | Admins and owners; on Enterprise/Edu, also members authorised through RBAC |
| Before it does something | Asks for approval, with an “Allow always” option | May ask for confirmation depending on permissions, context and impact; may block very risky actions |
| If the server tools change | Check them yourself: the developer can change them | The workspace keeps a frozen snapshot until an admin publishes the update |
| Automatic research mode | Research can call tools with no further approval: turn off write tools first | Deep research can only read or fetch |

Can Claude read your website?
Check whether your site lets AI crawlers in, whether it has structured data and whether it is a candidate for an MCP server.
If you want Claude to work with your site, we can help you connect it.
How we set it up
01. What you want to hand over
We talk through the specific tasks, the data they touch and which Claude plan you have.
02. Permissions
We decide which tools are switched on, with which credential, and what stays out.
03. Testing on a copy
We set up the server on a copy of your site and connect Claude with real tasks. We also check that the hosting firewall does not cut the connection.
04. Written handover
We move it to production and leave you a note of what each tool does and how to remove the connection.
Who does the work
We are a studio from Oleiros (A Coruña, Spain) with 8 years of hands-on WordPress experience, working freelance since February 2018. You talk to the person who does the work, not to a go-between. Meetings are by video call and, if you are in the city of Barcelona, we can also meet in person.
Claude and WordPress: frequently asked questions
Can Claude be connected to WordPress?
Yes. Claude connects to an MCP server installed on your WordPress site and uses the tools you allow from there. It does not need your administrator password.
Which Claude plan do I need?
According to Anthropic’s documentation, custom connectors are available on all plans, and Free allows one. On Team, only Owners and Primary Owners can add them; each person then connects their own account. We check again before setting it up, because plans change.
Can Claude publish on my website?
Only if you give it that tool. Claude asks for approval before using tools, unless you choose “Allow always” or use modes such as Research. If you want nothing published without you, give it permission to create drafts and not to publish.
What is the difference between an AI plugin and connecting Claude?
The plugin writes inside the WordPress editor. The connection works the other way round: from Claude, you work with your real pages, products or orders. If you only want help with writing, a plugin may be enough.
Does Claude see my customers’ data?
Only what the tools you switch on return. If a task does not need that data, that tool stays off. Before connecting orders or customers, we review which data travels and how it fits with GDPR.
Does it work if my site is behind a firewall?
It can fail. The connection comes from Anthropic’s cloud, so a private or firewalled server must allow its IP ranges. That is why it is tested before going to production.
